HANDBOX OF AMERICAN MOUNTAINEERING

By

Pub Date: May 5th, 1942
Publisher: Houghton, Mifflin

This is a handbook authorized and commissioned by the American Alpine Club as the first how to-do-it book concerned wholly with American mountain climbing. The subjects discussed fall under the following headings:- Rock Terrain, Ice and Snow, Dangers and Rescues, Camping, Cooking, Equipment, Personal Hygiene, Map Reading and Use of Compass, Mountain Weather, Sledging, Horsepacking, Photography, Communications, Mountains of the Western Hemisphere. The hows, by what means, where and whens are treated almost categorically, with the idea of making this a blueprint for specialists, not a book imbued with the spirit of the sport. Too bad that the need for concentrating the substance into pocket size has made it necessary to use such fine type for the test.
