This exciting look at firefighting is steeped in 1950’s style and engaging rhyme. The mirthful features of the firefighters are larger-than-life as they navigate routines and fellowship between fires: “Firefighters working hard. Cooking, Mopping, making beds. Playing tricks on sleepyheads.” But when the alarm sounds they rush to the ready, dress and board the engine with a resounding, “Firefighters to the Rescue!” The men race through the purple-hued streets of an American small town toward the billowing smoke. Taffy colors saturate every page with warmth as they pass the Crown Theatre that announces “Roy Rogers in ‘Trigger Jr.’ ” on its marquis. The automobiles are glorious in their retro colors and designs. When they reach the burning home, the firefighters make a harrowing rescue. Our cities and lives have changed over the decades, but this story makes it clear that firefighting has not. With just the right amount of tension and a large amount of admiration, Hamilton and Davis have created a sure fire hit. (Picture book. 3-6)
