SPURS FOR ANTONIA

An old pattern -- but entertainingly handled. Antonia comes West to join the father she does not know on the California ranch where she thinks only a son would be welcome. She's only about ten, and has a lot to face, but she does it gallantly and tries to be all a son should be. She learns about ranches and horses and cattle; she goes on a camping trip with her father, she is ""in all things valiant"" and wins her spurs. Deole Merwin has made several full pages in color that give the book quite an air. Personally they seemed a bit too pretty for the texture of the story.
