A BELLBIRD IN A FLAME TREE

Substituting Australian creatures for the traditional accumulation in ""The Twelve Days of Christmas,"" a talented illustrator creates an appealing alternate version of an old favorite. ""Twelve koalas clowning...ten dingoes dancing, nine numbats knitting,"" etc. are rendered in lovingly precise detail, with lively action that takes place against attractive greeting-card-style scenes. Music included; the whole crowd reappears on a last page, arranged to form a Christmas tree and to provide an extra chance to count the animals. Not essential, but pleasingly whimsical and inventive.
