The natural instincts of a border collie pup are at work in this gratifying sequel (Floss, 1992) that plays to the heart. In page after page, Lewis creates a strikingly realistic panoply of pups a-tumble. The children on the farm warm to all five of border collie Floss’s newborns, and can’t decide which one to keep—which one will be “just like Floss”—until the pup they call Sam strays too close to the flock. In a single, defiant moment, Sam stands up to an old ewe; the children cheer and the herd scatters as a new working sheep dog is born. Setting her story against a wintry backdrop, Lewis captures the spirit of puppies and their young caretakers at play. (Picture book. 3-6)
