SONGS OF MANY WARS

By

Publisher: Howell, Soskin

A useful collection of songs of men fighting, not only in this war but in wars of other times and many lands. National anthems are there (strange omission of the Communist International); folk songs, battle songs, hymns of freedom, drawn from Europe and Asia and America, from the 16th century to World War II. Guerilla marching songs are of particular interest in this growing awareness of an active fighting underground. Words, in the original and in translation; music, in arrangement for voice and piano; introductory notes giving source and historical significance. One regrets some carelessness in proof reading of the musical scores, but on the whole it is an excellent job. And -- for these days particularly -- a good looking book.
