One aspect of the war between the democracies and Hitler in this story of spies at work in the Northern countries. Foreign correspondent in Scandinavia for six years, the author reconstructs from court proceedings, police records and investigations an adequate recording, but it lacks the drama, the interest that espionage material usually holds. Largely the story of the duel between Russian and German Secret Service, this narrows down to the struggle between two master spies, both fanatical patriots, both criminals. Pflugk-Hartung established hundreds of agents throughout Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Finland, Sweden, for the Nazi regime, while Woll-weber (""Jan Valtin's boss"") was his bitter Russian antagonist. The account of their espionage and counterespionage includes the activities of Quisling in Norway, -- sabotage, treason, etc., In general throughout those countries. A bit spotty factual matter on a minuscule scale.
