KIRKUS REVIEW

In addition to a page or so describing each of 38 recommended breeds (and almost as many kinds of breeders), dog-writer Unkelbach's latest book touches on such matters (many of them covered at greater length in his previous volumes) as the costs and demands of dog ownership; the rudiments of housebreaking, feeding, and basic training; the different shows, levels, points, and classes of interest to a ""dog fancier""; and a few ways of making a living with dogs. Unkelbach tries to be breezy (""We are not gathered on these pages to dictate your choice. . ."") and smart (news of a contraceptive dog food elicits ""Three cheers for Bitch Lib!""), but comes no closer in style than he does in sensibility to the Pinkwaters' incomparable Superpuppy (1977). Run-of-the-puppy-mill.
