Set on a South Pacific island, this is the story of a white woman, a group of friendly islanders, and an angry volcano. When Miss Buchanan, the school mistress of Firecrest Island, learns from Dr. Mason, an irascible scientist of a neighboring island that Firecrest volcano will soon erupt, she evacuates her native friends to a neighboring jungle island. Here she encounters fear that her flock will starve, foul play from the ""ghosts"" of the jungle, and hostility from Dr. Mason. But she persists with devotion until harmony is reestablished, the spirits exorcised, and her adopted son assured of an education which will equip him to continue the work she has so successfully begun. Author of many books for adults, among them Tiburon (S.H. Prior Memorial Prize for the best Australian novel of 1935), Kylie Tennant tells a good story and enriches it with a vivid picture of the islands and the men who inhabit them.
