EXPLORING THE AMERICAS

Following a rough chronological order, this surveys the explorations in North and South America from the earliest Viking expeditions to the penetration of Greenland in 1932. Admittedly broad in scope, this is nonetheless a well written overview. Along with the familiar conquests of Vespucci, Balboa, Cartier and Hudson, there is lesser known data on the exciting search for El Dorado, the naming of the Amazon, South America and Canada in the nineteenth century and the unique features of English, French and Spanish colonization. Firm and factual, this can be used judiciously in schools. A companion volume to Exploring the Pacific.
