The only drawback to this book is the confusion the layman will find over the interchangeable use of the terms Larkspur and Delphinium. Dr. Bailey is correct in stating they are the same but the average gardener speaks of the annual variety as Larkspur and the hardy or perennial as Delphinium. Since your customers will say ""Oh I don't need a book on larkspur, I have no trouble with them, it's delphinium I am crazy over and have found hopeless"" it is vitally important for you to explain at once that this book by an eminent horticulturist on the cultivation, care and propagation of both larkspur and delphinium. Two excellent chapters are contributed by Leon H. Leonian, editor of the American Delphinium Society, on delphinium diseases and W. E. Blauvett, college of Agriculture at Cornell, on pests that attack the species. There is a list of 113 varieties of 75 species and a key to the varieties. If there is a solution to our delphinium problem Dr. Bailey should hold the key, especially if the gardener will follow his suggestion to consider delphinium a biennial and replace the old plants with healthy new ones every third year. No one ever gives up the hope of raising delphinium, especially those who love them with lilies and lupins as they are grown in England and our northern and western states, so this should be an easy book to sell every gardener on your list.
