FACIAL JUSTICE by L. P. Hartley

This is a symbolic allegory which invites comparison with Orwell (or, on a more superficial level, it is science fiction). The world it projects is a convalescent civilization after atomic World War III. Envy is the besetting sin and equality the prime virtue. For the sinners, the Ministry of Facial Justice obviates envy via plastic surgery. In Jael's revolt and determination to defend her individuality the book is tender and touching.
