Adventures of a Sumatra planter, which contributes little that is new if one has read the Lulofs' novels and Somerset Maugham's stories of Java and Sumatra. But this crystallizes it all on the actual experiences of a Hungarian youth who ran away from home, and then had to stay it out. Vivid and horrible picture of the effect of the tropics on Europeans, the cruelty, the inhumanity, the fearful extremes of temperature, the relations with natives, the ""home life"" made bearable only with native mistresses. For high spots, read the chapter telling of planters on holiday, of the arrival of a new shipment of coolies, of an elephant hunt, of the havoc wrought by the wife of the American engineer, etc. Sell for human interest and travel interest.
