KIRKUS REVIEW

A companion volume to his earlier The Art of Dramatic Writing (Simon & Schuster-1942) this adapts the same principles to short stories, plays and TV and has a fairly high pressure salesmanship approach. You CAN write, you can lose your fear of writing, you can be TAUGHT to write, you can learn the secrets and tricks of making your characters human and lifelike. In a series of chapters, he covers the selection of subject, the importance of observation, methods of developing the motivation, how to start a story, means of sustaining suspense, etc., etc. A cheering section for those who wish to write, this gives examples of the object to be achieved, does some analysis of others' writings, and should have its value as a morale builder in its undiminished exhortation to prove what you can do. Playwright, producer and director of the Egri School of Writing, in New York City, Egri is a persistent coach.
