THE SCULPTURED IMAGE by Lamont Moore

THE SCULPTURED IMAGE

Extending the principle of the ""imaginary museum"" to many of the most famous sculptural monuments of the world, Mr. Moore offers a guided tour, a Grand Tour, within the confines of a slim volume. Various related ""images""--of gods as monsters, of gods as men, of fame, of courage and sacrifice, etc.--are grouped together, but qualities other than subject are commented on also. Precisely in the manner of a lecturer (not necessarily a dull one), the author refers to style, technique, material and formal qualities where appropriate; the accretion of information can be expected to give the reader some insight into sculpture in general. This is not assured appreciation but it is a start, and adults may forgive some questionable aesthetic achievements (Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty) for their interest to kids.
