Little Joe, of Red Mittens and The Scary Thing (1956, p. 785, J-275), wakes up in the middle of the night to strange, unexplainable noises outside his window. Joe takes a survey of his farm animals the next day, but only the cat had heard the ""scratching...squealing and...growling"". He walks with Joe ""intoother night"". He goes home to bed and on waking up again, knows all the answers to the origin of the things that go bump in the night. The author uses her words artfully. Simple, satisfying, and -- best of all-- a reassuring book.
