WEEDS IN WINTER by Lauren Brown

WEEDS IN WINTER

By

Pub Date: Nov. 15th, 1976
Publisher: Norton

An attractive guide to Northeastern US weeds in winter based on Roger Tory Peterson's principles of identification. Ms. Brown notes the essential characteristics of each family, discusses what to look for besides the obvious elements--the site, appearance of the stem, smell--and wisely recommends using more than one specimen as a sample. Although her drawings are skillful, providing enlargements of small parts as well as pictures of the entire weed, they are not sufficient for identification, but must be seen in conjunction with the accompanying paragraphs of descriptive and factual material. A practical handbook for home or field (where a paperback edition would be preferable).
