WHAT DO ANIMALS DO ON THE WEEKEND?

Here an array of alliterative activities takes an alphabet of animal couples away from the everyday, from “Ants in an art gallery? Absolutely!” to Zack and Zoe Zebra zig-zagging through clouds aboard their zeppelin. Dancing, driving, or flying through locales both exotic and familiar, the adventurers are all plainly having a wonderful time in Faulkenberry’s bright, digitally colored lino-block prints. The author adds a random fact or two at the bottom of each spread—“A zeppelin is like a hot air balloon, but it’s shaped like a football. Zebras are from Africa, and no two have the same pattern of stripes”—and invites readers at the end to imagine what her manic menagerie might be up to next weekend. Fans of Bruce Ingram’s Night on the Tiles (1999), Nina Laden’s The Night I Followed the Dog (1994) and the like will welcome this expanded take on the topic. (Picture book. 6-8)
