This action-packed second book picks up three weeks after the end of The Incorruptibles (2025). Fiora and her crew are now “outlaws” from Inc Academy, and their goal is to figure out how to reverse the Dark Deals that make humans into sorcerers—but they face many obstacles, including a revelation about Mel’s family history that turns her against Captain Quinn. And before they learn how to cure sorcerers, they need to face two of the most powerful: Lightmare and the Radiance. Fiora, with her “annoyingly strong moral compass” and strength in high-pressure situations, is still terrified of losing loved ones and anguished over Mel’s focus on vengeance, but she learns to trust her teammates and share the risks as they face one high-stakes situation after another. Themes of justice vs. vengeance, doing the right thing, and the problems inherent in wielding power run through the story, setting up for an exciting third book. As Quinn says, “Sometimes you have to break a few rules to change the world.” Fiora, who’s cued Jewish, is attracted to girls, and there’s additional diversity in ability and gender identity in the supporting cast.
