Any number of books picture construction equipment for young fans; here, in his first picture book, a noted author of science books for young people adds an imaginative dimension to the standard formula. Jesse brings a big box of toy equipment to the sand-pile, where--after donning his hard hat (brought along by his assistant, the family dog)--he gets to work. Then he and the dog are shown driving all their splendid equipment, grown to full size, to shift rocks and build roads and a bridge--until it's,time to go home and the machines return to their cardboard box. Morrill's straightforwardly realistic, rather old-fashioned illustrations are just right for children like Jesse who like to pretend and want to know how things work.
