THE STORY OF SCOTLAND YARD

An historical and contemporary survey of Scotland Yard, its men and the criminal cases they solve is gripping factual material for the more serious young would-be detectives and a reliable commentary on one of the world's most polished police forces. Beginning back in the 18th century, when an organized patrol for London was no more than an idea, Mr. Thompson presents us dramatically to such groups and personalities as the Fieldings-Henry and Sir John- the Bow Street Runners and Robert Peel whose day saw the Yard's real organizational development. Coming down to today, there are the aspects of the modern Yard at work- as the brain of the police force. Science, the different squad divisions, the individual men themselves, the people who help from outside- and their concerted efforts- are well defined in a full, animated record. A good companion book for Lynn Poole's Science the Super Sleuth (reported below) or Reynolds' The Story of the F.B.I. (448).
