Of the dark inner fury school is this episode of a girl's farewell to youth. A consciously articulate interpretation of the life of the Florida pinelands and the people that inhabit them in the story of Farrell, identifying herself with her dead father, repudiating her mother and her family, and dreaming of escape from the pinelands. Then a migratory worker wakens her passions, accepts her love, and expects her to follow him when he leaves. But a storm and the murder of a pet bird reveal the inner values of the place that gave her birth and the man who has always loved her. Lawrence-Caldwell derivation -- not for public library consumption.
