JANEY'S FORTUNE

A summer in the West provides Janey McGovern not only with a deeper understanding of people but with a new life she can call her own. With her widowed mother married to a man with two children, her boy friend gone and her doubts heavy about the character qualifications of her recently dead grandfather, Janey goes healtantly to Albuquerque and the Bakers who had been friends of Gramps McGovern's. Making her way with strangers, in particular with young Rob Baker who wants to study archeology, is complicated by the whereabouts of Gramps' old gold mine. When it is found a surprise awaits Rob and Janey, settling their futures and those of their neighbors in unexpected ways. A substantially interwoven set of family and social relationships marks this but in the writing each strand is clear. Lavinia Davis has already made her mark in teen age as well as younger fiction and this healthy story deepens it.
