KIRKUS REVIEW

A thoughtful study of music from the point of view of the intelligent listener, who wants to know what to listen for, and how to find it. Step by step, Mr. Abbott reveals the ideas and patterns behind music, -- accent and rhythm, theme and motive, key changes, interpretation by voice or instrument, the program ""labels"" and their meaning, and the moods that music interprets and reflects. A good how-to-do book for a music audience. The last third of the book traces the history of music.
