KIRKUS REVIEW

10 familiar fairy tales -- but not all the most often collected. Of the regulars, there is Beauty and the Beast. Rumpelstiltskin and The Golden Goose. The others are: The Sorcerer's Apprentice; The Three Brothers; The Magic Ship; The Emperor's Nightingale; The Three Wishes; Toads and Diamonds; The King of the Golden River. Mr. Smith's illustrations, like the ones he provided for the Hans Christian Andersen anthology and in the Macmillan Classics Series, are notable for their clear, slightly exaggerated lines and are most effective in the color pages which alternate with the black and whites.
