Publisher: Knopf

Historical romance, touched with case and grace, and emerging as a lighthearted period place which adds yet another string to Mr. Watkins's longbow. Young McLean, whose Tory father had been deprived of lands and money, returns in 1795, to claim his birthright, now in the hands of a Mr. Middletown. He fails- and, in revenge, runs off with the daughter, Marie, to Kentucky and a mock marriage. Marie plays her cards adroitly, and against his will, Peter is caught by her charm. Pursuit, brawling, duelling by the wayside, fatten up a slim but gay story. Some sales- some rentals.
