KIRKUS REVIEW

The decrescendo of anti-Semitic Franz Benda as he rides on his former fame in Prague to form the Benda quartet in the United States. His drawing power and position are displaced by his second violinist, Hugo Provarsoh, a Jew. Benda hates Hugo for humiliating him, envies Hugo his lovely wife, and eventually murders, tries to kill again, betrays himself. The continental touches do not make this any more palatable.
