THE ULTIMATE ACT

The murder-suicide of an elderly couple in Paris leaves more than the 24 hour differential to be accounted for: whose relative will inherit, his or hers? and are her jewels real or imitation? and who is Audrey and what is she -- to the dead man? Mr. Bachmann's story is very complicated rather than difficult and the tone suggests the kind of middle-aged, middle class reader who travels by Fielding.
