AN EMPIRE OF THE DUST

Good human document in first hand record of a farmer of the Kansas Dust Bowl, whose conclusions that the whole region is already a desert that cannot be reclaimed by the plans and labors of man is hard come by, through bitter experience. With faith in his land and in himself, he fought for nine years to produce a crop -- with one success. He met drought, flood, farms on the move, catastrophe after catastrophe. He saw his neighbors leave, he saw the dust bowl area advance, he saw government projects fail. A vivid picture -- a reluctant record of defeat.
