Roundabout, retrospective narration heighten the momentum in the story of Norma when she is arrested for the murder of the husband she hated and pitied. Her childlike attractions win the sympathy of investigating Lt. Decker but do not deflect him from his duty. Pete, whom she loves, tries to cover for her until finally, when she is released, Norma makes her complete confession to him and the law. The practised technique, sustained interest give this its superiority.
