THE STORY OF ROME

These books always come as a visual shock (The Story of Roman Britain, The Story of Ancient Athens et al.) It seems incredible that clumsily colored, non-information pictures are inserted among the well done line drawings, carefully labeled maps and excellent photographs of artifacts and statuary; that the length of the scanning line should be so long; that the format presented to this age group should be so picture-bookish. However, in pulling yourself together after all these insults to the eye, you will find a well digested history of Rome explaining the form of government, the military machine and its fighting methods, information about daily life at all levels and Roman engineering innovations. A low-priced, uneven-in-quality extra title.
