TOM BENN AND BLACKBEARD, THE PIRATE

A legend heard down around Ocracoke Inlet in North Carolina makes rare good fodder for another of Le Grand's bombshells of Americana (see When the Mississippi was Wild and Cats for Kansas for other such). The skeleton of the story- the bones of the tale- are 11 year old Tom's bravery and daring as he goes off with the pirates who have come to his home for supplies, and on a return raid, slips overboard in a tub to warn the U. S. Navy of mean Blackbeard's intent. Le Grand's imagination, in words and booming pictures, makes the most of things. Fun for everyone.
