AUGUSTUS HELPS THE ARMY

This is as good as the best, and better than most of the popular Augustus books. Pop isn't quite so much in the foreground, but he has his moments. And Augustus himself, with his new friend down in Georgia (where Pop wouldn't get an epidemic in his back), manage to do their bit for their country. Pop is working -- in his fashion -- at an army camp. Augustus wants to do his share, and starts by getting a sandwich right out from under an irate customer's nose, so that the soldier who shares his seat in the bus won't go hungry. He is saved from disgrace by Augustus' quick wit -- when the fat lady poster becomes a patriotic slogan. Cotton picking almost gets him down, but he comes out on top. And the main adventure ends in rounding up three spies.
