A satire on parlor socialism, in a story of a ""committee"" fired to right the wrong by exposing the lack of possibility of free speech in a southern mill town. (A suggestion of the Harlan Country affair). Each member of the committee is finding in miniature a chance to still a conscience that demands greater action on behalf of oppressed mankind. When the venture proves dangerous, unpleasant, they show their true colors -- and take hastily to retreat. Clever but too too facile in writing.
