George (Tonto) Riley, migrant cowpuncher, comes to a New Mexican hamlet in answer to a mysterious letter concerning a dead friend of his father's. He finds he is heir to the dead man's ranch -- if he can make it pay during two test years and also bring to justice the slayer of the dead man's son. Trouble with a gambler, a surviving relative, two girls, and various sinister figures are part of the solution. Spare, lean prose and a taut story put this cowboy-mystery well up in its class.
