For anyone- eleven and up- who has ever picked up a pencil to doodle, this book of useful tips on achieving specific effects will be interesting and instructive. The arrangement of lines, dots and shapes result in some unusual abstract results. Solving the problem of the human face (with a variety of expressions) and the human figure (in action) is neatly accomplished in a step by step diagramed procedure. Sketching simple objects like a tree, a horse, a house- is demonstrated in a series of light drawings that gradually develop into the firm picture. All the unusual techniques of leaf printing, India-ink penwork, rubber sponge printing, etc. encourage the novice to experiment. Lee Ames strikes a neat balance between traditional instruction and creativity, through his many clear-cut illustrations and his succinct descriptive text.
