KIRKUS REVIEW

A sincere little story about a Finnish boy points out the value of honest endeavour rather than hoped for miracles. With his father off to war, Mikko and his mother live alone and would be quite happy if they only had a cow. Hoping to find one, Mikko starts out through the snow, taking three possessions of his father's for lucka long scarf, a book and a lantern. Instead of a cow, Mikko finds three neighbor's children in danger and is able to lead them home by winding the scarf around each. The children's father is so thankful, he gives Mikko a cow.
