KIRKUS REVIEW

This age level has few mysteries -- so even one like this which provides interesting details at a superficial and unconvincing level, will be popular. A Finnish settlement in a New England granite-quarrying town, at the turn of the century, backgrounds the story of the adventures of Helmi and Mikko and their funny pet horse, Polle, responsible for leading them into a somewhat contrived series of happenstances. There's plenty of mild summery doings- fishing, blueberrying, etc., but there's a mystery of sorts, lost money recovered, a reward won, and the quarry superintendent promises a school teaching job for dad, instead of stoneworking at the quarry.
