For this entry in the Get Around series, Hill (Schools Help Us Learn, 1998, etc.) presents 28 different vehicles including ancient and modern ships from around the world. Among the vessels covered are ships propelled by paddlewheel, gasoline, and sail, and watercraft for transport, work, war, and pleasure. Each page provides a full-color photograph and two or three sentences. The book has several limitations; the photographs, though colorful, are generally too small to show the special feature that led to the watercraft’s inclusion, e.g., the science ship’s “special equipment [that] helps them study ocean life,” the dredges that “scoop up the muck,” or the ferryboats that “carry people along with their cars.” Confusing to emerging readers is the author’s occasional use of a sentence fragment, rather than a sentence. A photo index provides more information on the featured watercraft. (Nonfiction. 6-8)
