AFTER NIRVANA

Shades of filmmaker Gus Van Sant: an insufficiently dramatic first novel about streetwise teenaged hustlers (the narrator Davy, his girlfriend Nikki, boyfriend James, and their increasingly out-of-control partner Branch) who work the public rest-room and adult video circuits in the Seattle/Portland, Oregon, area, seeking cash, drugs, kicks, and love. This is what would have happened to The Catcher in the Rye if John Rechy had got hold of him. As one of Williams's essentially passive boy-toys puts it: ""This is stupid here, a total waste of time."" Holden Caulfield couldn't have said it better.
