The family move to the Victorian house in Riverdale, New York, overlooking the Hudson, furthered Shelley Andrews' hope to become a ballet dancer. It meant she could study at the Theatre Art High School. Shelley is admitted after a competitive audition. Once enrolled, her drive carries her over many hurdles; an infatuation with fickle, opportunistic Paul Stoddard, a boy who tries to trade on Shelley's knowledge of choreography to gain the convertible his mother promised him for success; a cumulative clash of wills with supercilious Astrea who accuses Shelly of plagiarizing an original dance; and finally her decision to forget the bitterness left in Paul's wake to share her social life with Craig - the worthwhile would-be producer she meets during a season of summer theatre.
