Just as the French have chosen the fox as their animal symbol of cleverness, the Indians and the Mexicans have built similar folk tales around the coyote, even to making Don Coyote brother to their hero, Pecos Bill. These are folk tales indigenous to our own Southwest, retold so as to build a rounded picture of the tricky coyote, and to incorporate some of the earth legends, and the hows and why of animal behaviour. There is an introductory chapter giving some factual nature information about the coyote, and showing why legends have sprung up to show how he wins with his wits what other wild creatures win by stealth or strength.
