A refreshing, entertaining bit of nonsense in The Demon in the House school of Angela Thirkell, and The Golden Age of Kenneth Grahame. Childhood recollections, patently reminiscences, and sometimes too much the self-conscious adult looking backwards, but great fun nonetheless. The episodes revolve around the adventures and misadventures of two small Mississippi town youngsters and the outer fringe of the adults who compose their world. The material is episodic in character, but is built gradually into a slender plot. A book for pick-up reading that is good entertainment, but distinctly geared to that market which enjoys somewhat nostalgic reminiscences of childhood, more humorous in content than in handling.
