Miller was commissioned by Davis & Gack, makers of surgical sutures, to do a series of photographic recreations of surgery in ancient times which would constitute a pictorial record of the history of surgery. These pictures are reproduced here with accompanying text, biographical and historical in content. The history of surgery and of surgeons described in the various operative tableaux go back to the times of the ancient Egyptians, Greece and Rome, the Far East, etc. and bring surgery down through the Middle Ages in Europe to Fare and Vesalius, ending with Lister and . The text severs the outstanding exponents, their precepts, their innovations, with general remarks on the progress of surgery in the period. The pictures are generally dramatic, with full emphases on agony and audity. Other critics, who do set is agree with us, have awarded the collection the Box Award.
