If this had not followed in the wake of his Saiah and His American, it might be easier to judge it on its own merits, as a story of a Maine family from the 89's to the close of the World War. The lives of the old and new generations -- the unchanging background of the farm -- these are the ingredients for a serious novel of people and place. Lacks the subtle unique charm of the earlier book. An adequate but uninspired piece of work, which doesn't measure up to other books of its type -- As The Earth Turns. Time Out of Mind, Mary Peters, etc.
