HOLD WITH THE HARES

The same tough treatment of What D'Ya Know For Sure (1947) directed at Steve Anderson, a columnist with liberal streaks which are subordinated to his basic opportunism. To be in the big time, he backtracks on his anti-war stand, loses the girl he loves, but gains himself a place on a Turner paper, a reactionary chain, in Buffalo. There he gives up one girl because she is Jewish and might hamper his career, would give up another were she not pregnant, and finally- with the war- enlists. Steve's desire to fight is obstructed by old man Turner who secures him a correspondent's job, but Steve- having nothing to live for-goes on a mission hoping to get killed and unexpectedly finds himself a hero. Returning home, unable to write, he finally gets his chance to escape in helping a radical friend, buying a small town paper and making a fresh start. Basic anglo-saxon and basic instincts recorded with a plausibility often unpleasant, if, in this genre, competently handled.
