Stina enjoys her summer visit to Grandpa's seaside cottage, helping him check his nets and surprising him by washing the dishes (outdoors, without plumbing). Even a big storm is so interesting that Stina goes out in it alone, but finds it more alarming than she had imagined. Wise Grandpa, finding her weeping on a windswept rock, takes her inside--where they both dress more appropriately in rain gear and venture forth again to celebrate the bracing weather, returning to their cozy house with a useful present brought by the storm. The uncredited translation from the Swedish reads well, but most beguiling are this gifted artist's watercolor illustrations showing the rocky northern seascape, the gleaming summer light, and the appealing child. An attractive glimpse of a not-so-different culture.
