The vitriolically destructive satirist and stand-up comic Lenny Bruce has been arrested nineteen times for obscenity, maligning the Pope in Chicago, possession of narcotics, and so on. Lenny defends himself here, reprinting tapes of his shows to prove that the police misrepresented him in court. And he has a doctor's certificate for the anti-depressant he takes by injection. He's been having trouble getting work because the police in any city will arrest him out-of-hand. Lenny's blistering attach is against the structure of U.S. society-- our incredibly twisted religious values, sex mores, provincialism, legal traps, cops, government, etc. Bruce sees himself as a semanticist and his main weapon is dirty words although he uses the obscenity as in character with the person he's miming. Some people think Bruce has the hardest cutting edge of all U.S. comics. Still, some of the material reproduced here whirls inscrutably about, signifying nothing.... #$%!&f Lenny, and a big red (Q).
