THE GREAT HAMSTER HUNT

Here's a whirl for hamster owners and would-be owners; even for wouldn't-be owners like Nicholas' mother, who sighs that Tony-next-door's mother ""is just nicer than I am."" Then Tony goes away for a week, leaving his hamster with Nicholas--warning him to keep Harvey ""herbivorous"" (which he explains), reminding him that Harvey is ""nocturnal"" (which he doesn't). All is well until the last night when, chewing through a cardboard replacement for a glass panel, Harvey gets loose. Dad's ingenious traps (a trail of lettuce to a tipped plastic wastebasket in each room) don't work but Mother's ""nocturnal"" music does--after they've found a replacement for Harvey who becomes, with Mother's blessing, a present for Nicholas. A short, snappy story, told and drawn with flair and a feel for the appeal of hamsters.
