WORD AND MYSTERY

The ""word"" and the ""mystery"" of this book's title refer, respectively, to Scripture and to Christ, and conjunctively to the mystery of Christ as revealed in the Scriptures. The essays which comprise the volume (all of which have been previously published) fall into two groups; first, those treating of the ways in which the New Testament authors express their faith in Christ and his mission; second, those elucidating various mysteries in the life of Christ as they are recorded in the Bible. Although several of the translations are clumsy, the book will be of use to students of the Bible. Unfortunately, the essays are too diverse with respect to the audience at which they are aimed to be of much use to the lay reader; they range from Pierre Benoit's lucid ""Pauline and Johannine Theology"" to the obscurities of Rahner's ""On the Theology of the Incarnation""--a span which the non-specialist will find forbidding.
